Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus. Also called leiomyomas or myomas, fibroids vary in size, number, and location. Some women have no symptoms, while others experience symptoms that interfere with work, daily routines, or overall quality of life.

Fibroids are one of the most common gynecologic conditions, particularly during the reproductive years. Depending on their size and location, they may contribute to heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pressure, frequent urination, lower back pain, constipation, or pain during intercourse. Larger fibroids can also affect the shape of the uterus and, in some cases, fertility or pregnancy.

Although uterine fibroids are common, researchers continue working to better understand why they develop, why symptoms differ among women, and how investigational approaches may address fibroid-related symptoms.
