Endometriosis is a chronic condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. These growths can develop on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, pelvic lining, and other nearby structures, where they respond to hormonal changes and may cause inflammation, scarring, and pain over time.

Symptoms vary from person to person. While some women experience severe symptoms, others have few or none. Common symptoms include painful menstrual periods, chronic pelvic pain, pain during intercourse, pain with bowel movements or urination during menstruation, heavy menstrual bleeding, and, in some cases, difficulty becoming pregnant.

Chronic pelvic pain is one of the most common symptoms associated with endometriosis, but its severity does not always reflect how extensive the condition is. Some women experience discomfort only during their menstrual cycle, while others have persistent pelvic pain that affects work, daily activities, relationships, and overall quality of life. Because symptoms often overlap with other conditions, receiving an accurate diagnosis may take time.

Endometriosis clinical trials evaluate investigational approaches aimed at improving scientific understanding of this complex condition and the factors that contribute to pain, inflammation, and disease progression.

Research may assess symptom patterns, inflammatory processes, lesion characteristics, quality of life, and other clinical measures used to better understand endometriosis. Some studies evaluate investigational therapies, while others focus on improving how the condition is identified, monitored, or evaluated over time.
